Erasmus+ – project
I am Rev. Canon Andrew Sumani, a resident priest of the Anglican Diocese of Lake Malawi from Malawi, Central Africa. Current I lecture as well as oversee the College for Christian Ministries, a constituent College of the Lake Malawi Anglican University (LAMAU). Canon Andrew Sumani has taught Old Testament, Theology, Hebrew and Greek for over 10 years. Through lecturing in Old Testament, I came to appreciate the stewardship role that human kind has toward God’s creation. I came to realize that care for God’s creation is not an option but rather mandatory, if at all, we are to demonstrate our obedience to God, the Creator. My passion for creation care was enhanced in February, 2018 when I was privileged to be among few people from Malawi who went to South Africa, Pietermaritzburg, for a conference on Creation care and the Gospel.
Rev. Canon Andrew Sumani comes from Malawi. The country is a landlocked bordered by Zambia to the northwest, Tanzania to the northeast and Mozambique on the east, west and south. It covers about 118, 484 km2 and as of July 2018, has an estimated population of 18, 143, 217 with over 80% of the population engaged in subsistence farming. The country is nicknamed “the Warm Heart of Africa” due to the friendliness of her people. Malawi is among the least-developed countries with her economy heavily based on Agriculture although it only contributes around 30% of GDP, with largely rural population amidst widespread unemployment. The country faces challenges in different sections such as, healthcare, education, and including environmental protection. People largely depend on charcoal and firewood as a source of energy for cooking. This poses a big threat to stakeholders’ efforts toward environmental care and protection.
